Daddy-2.O
The Danelectro Daddy O.
Most of you probably know of this pedal but maybe don't know much about it. It is a "tube overdrive" style pedal similar to
the Ibanez Tube Screamer. It boasts three tone controls, plus volume and drive controls. It has good headroom and lots of
spare gain. Interestingly enough with the drive cranked way up, this pedal also makes a great fuzz pedal. Nonetheless I
feel the prevailing opinion on this pedal is that it is good, but it just doesn't live up to it's potential. Most complain that the
overdrive is very fizzy and which is great for fuzz but ruins the tube tone. The TL072 opamp it uses, while decent, makes
the sound a little too "computery". It also uses a way-too-big resistor for the LED, that dulls the tone considerably.
We felt all of this was reason enough to get involved.
So we set out to right these wrongs, and help this pedal achieve its full potential. With some very simple enhancements,
we did. The quick and dirty of it is as follows:
-We dropped the LED resistor value which immediately gave the tone considerably more character. We were surprised
ourselves at how dynamic a tone this pedal can produce.
-We removed the crappy 3mm LEDs this pedal uses for clipping diodes and replaced them with some beefier diodes to
kill some of the fizziness.
-We replaced the TL072 opamp with a JRC4558D (and socket) giving it a much smoother warmer tone. The TI RC4558P
works well too. It's a little hotter than the JRC but stays smooth rather than fizzing out. It's a good 50 cent experiment to try
if you want a little something extra. It's almost a toss-up.
Did it work?
Well see for yourself. The following clip shows how the Daddy - 2.O stacks up against our "better than the real thing" fully
customized TS-808 clone, The Valve Screamer. The Valve Screamer features metal film caps and resistors throughout, a
TI-RC4558P opamp, selectable symmetrical/asymmetrical clipping, and true bypass (sorry, they're not for sale yet). You'd
spend $300 or more to get a Tube Screamer that sounds like this. I'm not telling you this to brag, only to make the point
that at $50, the Daddy - 2.O may be the best bang for the buck on the market. Check it out:

So the way this works is, I buy cheap working Daddy Os wherever I can find them, make sure they are working properly
(this pedal is practically indestructible) and then mod them. Once complete you have something like what you just heard for
50-60 bucks depending on their condition. They're cheaper than a new one and sound considerably better. I will also mod
YOUR Daddy O for a modest $25 plus $10 return shipping (they're heavy). Before you spend more on something else, or
sell that Daddy O that has been collecting dust, give us a try.
